Impact stories: foundations that transform
COLCES Editorial
Behind every nonprofit organization is a story of commitment and dedication. In this edition, we highlight the work of three Colombian foundations that are generating significant impact in their communities and serve as inspiration for the entire sector.
Digital Education in the Countryside: ConectaRural Foundation
In the mountains of Narino, where internet connectivity is a luxury, the ConectaRural Foundation has managed to bring technology training programs to more than 50 rural communities. Their innovative model combines in-person education with digital tools that work without an internet connection.
The foundation's flagship program, "Connected Classrooms," equips rural schools with tablets preloaded with educational content and trains local teachers as technology facilitators. To date, more than 3,000 children and young people have participated in the program, and school dropout rates in served communities have decreased by 40%.
"Technology doesn't replace the teacher, it empowers them," explains Maria Fernanda Guerrero, the foundation's director. "Our goal is for rural children to have the same learning opportunities as those in cities."
Guardians of the Forest: AmazonViva Association
In the heart of the Colombian Amazon, the AmazonViva Association works side by side with six indigenous communities to protect more than 100,000 hectares of tropical forest. Their participatory approach, which combines ancestral knowledge with modern environmental monitoring techniques, has been recognized by the UN as a replicable model.
The "Forest Guardians" program trains indigenous youth in satellite mapping technology to detect deforestation in real time. The collected data is shared with environmental authorities and has contributed to the prosecution of five illegal logging networks.
Additionally, AmazonViva has developed a biocommerce program that generates sustainable income for communities through the commercialization of non-timber forest products, such as essential oils and crafts.
